Renovation Fund

To renovate the tower
total cost £450,000

Welcome to the St Aloysius’ Church website. This city-centre Jesuit Catholic Church serves the Catholics in Glasgow and the West of Scotland and beyond.
The gracious gift of almighty God in the sending of his Son, what St Augustine called the Sacrament of the Incarnation, and the continuing work of the Holy Spirit in penetrating the depths of God’s love, a light that the darkness cannot overcome, leads us here to pray to the saints and worship Christ with the love of God which has been poured into our hearts.
We seek to deepen the life of all who come here with our emphasis on the vital importance of the spiritual life, outlined in the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. The care of souls, through the sacraments, preaching and works of mercy, gives St Aloysius a unique Jesuit and catholic flavour which makes the church a haven of solace and peace in the midst of the city.
Please do browse through these pages and learn about our way of proceeding and, if you can, come and see the wonder and beauty of this church built one hundred years ago to the greater glory of God. May almighty God bless you, keep you from all evil and call you into his wonderful light.

Opening of St Aloysius, Garnethill for private prayer.

The church will reopen for prayer on Monday 22nd June.
In order to properly welcome, assist and keep visitors safe, the opening times will be limited to 11.00 to 1.00pm from Monday to Saturday. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the sanctuary during the prayer time.
For the time being, St Aloysius will remain closed on Sundays; the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays is still suspended in Scotland and we would encourage everyone to continue to pray and worship at home and with families.
As the weeks progress, we will review the situation: God willing, if COVID-19 is held at bay and there are sufficient volunteers to maintain a safe-&-secure environment, St Aloysius might be able to open for longer and/or at different times.
Thanks to those who have already given their time to prepare for the opening and have volunteered their time to act as stewards. If you are not at-risk yourself, but feel able to volunteer some time to assist the Jesuit community in their care of the Church, please email Fr Dermot at for more information.
A few practical points for visitors:
  • Please use a face-covering (a scarf or a mask) when you are inside the Church building.
  • Hand-sanitiser will be provided on entering & leaving the church,
  • The side-chapels, the Ogilvie Shrine, the Confessional rooms and the front benches will be cordoned off.
  • The toilets will remain closed until further notice.
During the prayer-time, we will try to make provision for Confessions (or a confidential discussion) with one of the priests. As this will likely be outside, it might be dependent on the Glasgow weather!
Let us continue to pray for each other and those who are suffering in so many different ways across the globe.

The global headquarters of The Society of Jesus, the General Curia  in Rome , has been receiving a huge number of wonderful Jesuit initiatives regarding the COVID-19 crisis.
The leader of the Society, Father Arturo Sosa SJ, has asked that a new website be launched to bring these initiatives together in one place, as well as to promote them in multiple languages so that people across the globe can access them more easily.

A Message from St Aloysius’ Church

Monday 20th April 2020
During the lockdown, some parishioners have been asking about the effect on the church finances.  The impact is that we are losing all of the contributions normally received via Mass collections, boxes in the church, donations and room hire.  As a suggestion, and if you are in the financial position to help, we would be very grateful to receive any donations through standing order, or cheque.  Some of you already donate weekly/monthly by standing order and we are very grateful to you.   If you would like to give regularly to the parish, the details are:
Bank:                  The Royal Bank of Scotland          Account Name:  St Aloysius Parish
Account Number: 00258381                                         Sort Code:         83 52 00
If you prefer to donate by cheque, please make the cheque out to
St Aloysius Parish
Thank you so much to all those who can do this.  We realise times are tough for a lot of people.
Every penny will make a difference at this very difficult time – thank you so much for your support.
Keep safe,

United in prayer.

Fr Dermot Preston, SJ
